Leicester City chairman Aiyawatt ‘Top’ Srivaddhanaprabha is set to take a more active role in the club’s daily operations after the departure of long-serving chief executive Susan Whelan.

It was confirmed on Thursday that Whelan, who joined City after King Power’s takeover in 2010, would be leaving her role.

Top will assume the position of interim chief executive while the club searches for a permanent replacement, meaning he will now be more directly involved in day-to-day matters.

Despite Whelan’s exit, a wider shake-up in leadership is not anticipated. Although fans have voiced frustration with the board—particularly targeting director of football Jon Rudkin through chants, protests, and banners over the past year—Top’s commitment is seen as firm, and Rudkin retains the chairman’s backing. Therefore, no changes in those positions are expected.

Still, the arrival of a new CEO from outside the club would represent the biggest structural change since King Power’s 2010 takeover.

Top, already serving as vice-chairman at the time, stepped up as chairman following the tragic death of his father Vichai. His leadership has been closely tied to the King Power family legacy.

Whelan’s departure was described as a mutual decision, though the club’s statement did not feature any words from her directly.

Reports suggest her working relationship with Rudkin had weakened in recent years.

Over her 15-year tenure, Whelan earned respect as one of football’s most influential executives. In 2018, when the Premier League sought a new executive chairman, she was appointed to the selection panel alongside then Chelsea chairman Bruce Buck and Burnley’s Mike Garlick.

Her responsibilities largely revolved around the club’s commercial operations rather than footballing matters.

However, she did step into transfer dealings when necessary. Notably, she fronted discussions with Manchester United over the record-breaking sale of Harry Maguire, leveraging her strong working relationship with then-CEO Ed Woodward.

She also reportedly played a key role in breaking the deadlock with Chelsea during Wesley Fofana’s high-profile transfer.

Whelan’s influence and achievements leave behind a significant legacy at Leicester City, even as the club prepares for its next phase under Top’s expanded leadership role.
