At the time, dropping those points felt like a major setback. But realistically, getting three points at the AMEX Stadium was always going to be a long shot—we just don’t win there.

It’s frustrating that Liverpool essentially switched off and let Chelsea cruise to a win in the later kickoff. That result allowed Chelsea to draw level with Newcastle on points.

Still, our fate remains in our own hands, especially with upcoming fixtures against both Chelsea and Arsenal. Victories in those matches would significantly alter the outlook.

The good news is that we don’t necessarily need to beat both to secure a top-five finish. With Everton at home on the final day, three points from that match seem likely.

That means a win against either Chelsea or Arsenal could be enough to get the job done.

Alan Shearer shares a similar view. On The Rest Is Football podcast, he mentioned he’d have gladly taken a draw at Brighton given our poor track record there.

“I saw Newcastle grab a point at Brighton, which I’d have taken any day given our terrible record there,” Shearer said. “Take the point, get out, and focus on Chelsea at home. A fair result.”

He also sounded optimistic about the fixtures ahead: “Newcastle’s run-in is Chelsea, Arsenal, and Everton—with two games at home.

I’m hopeful they’ll win the home games and maybe get something off Arsenal, especially with their Champions League distraction.”

That said, who’s to say we can’t take all nine points?

Chelsea will be feeling confident after their win over Liverpool, but with the Toon Army behind us at St. James’ Park, we’ve got every reason to believe we can beat them. We’ve also beaten Arsenal three times already this season—why not a fourth?

Then there’s Everton. They couldn’t even manage a win against Ipswich over the weekend, so we should be backing ourselves to beat them at home.

So, when you look at the remaining fixtures with a positive mindset, there’s a genuine chance Newcastle could win all three.

Of course, we don’t have to collect nine points, and there’s no need to panic if we fall short.

But Brighton was the game I feared most in this run-in, and we came away with a point—so we’re already ahead of where I thought we’d be.
