Tottenham’s Representation in the England Squad
Historically, Tottenham Hotspur has provided numerous players to the England national team. In fact, Spurs have produced more England internationals than any other club (Goal).
However, in recent years, their presence in the Three Lions squad has diminished significantly. Notably, not a single Tottenham player was included in the squad for the recent Euros.
James Maddison, after an impressive start to the season, seemed poised for a return to the England squad. However, it appears he has once again been overlooked (Ornstein).
Solanke Earns England Call-Up
Dominic Solanke, who has had a strong start since his high-profile move to Tottenham, has impressed with his pressing, link-up play, and goal-scoring ability.
After netting three goals in his last three matches, Solanke has earned a call-up to the England squad, seven years after his first and only cap back in November 2017.
Despite Solanke’s inclusion, Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou declined to comment on England manager Lee Carsley’s selection decisions when asked about Solanke’s readiness for international duty.
Postecoglou told Football.London, “There are no issues around him from a physical perspective.
I get enough stick for my own selections, mate, so I am not going to get involved in anyone else’s selections, but yeah, Dom is fine.”
Opportunity for Solanke
With Ivan Toney potentially facing difficulties rejoining the England squad following his move to Saudi Arabia, the door may be open for Solanke to step in as Harry Kane’s primary backup.
However, Ollie Watkins currently holds the spot ahead of him in the pecking order.
Many argue that Solanke is the most suitable like-for-like replacement for Kane, thanks to his link-up play, physical presence, and ability to finish from crosses.
While it remains to be seen if he will feature in upcoming internationals, receiving a call-up after seven years is already a significant achievement for the 26-year-old striker.
