Barcelona likely to miss out on midfielder as Aston Villa nears finalizing deal

Amadou Onana has been one of Barcelona’s primary targets for signing a defensive midfielder this summer. Currently playing for Everton, the Belgian is expected to leave Goodison Park as the club looks to balance its finances.

Barcelona has been monitoring the market for an opportunity to acquire Onana, known for his ability to control play in midfield. However, their hopes may be dashed as Aston Villa is now closing in on a deal to sign the Everton midfielder.

According to reliable journalist David Ornstein, Aston Villa is in the process of finalizing a deal for Onana, which could be worth around €60 million. Everton has already agreed on personal terms with the midfielder. Onana is expected to sign a long-term contract with Aston Villa, becoming a key component of Unai Emery’s midfield setup.

For Barcelona, missing out on Amadou Onana means one fewer option in their quest to sign a new defensive midfielder. However, due to his high valuation, Onana was never a highly feasible option for Barça. This has led the Catalan club to explore more cost-effective alternatives in the market.

Barcelona remains in contention to sign Mikel Merino, although Arsenal’s interest in the Spaniard could complicate matters. Additionally, the future of Joshua Kimmich will be intriguing to follow this summer. The German midfielder is likely to leave Bayern Munich, and it remains to be seen if Barça can capitalize on any potential market opportunity.
