Pittsburgh Steelers general manager Omar Khan refrained from disclosing whether the team plans to exercise Najee Harris’ fifth-year option or negotiate a long-term contract with him this offseason. During an interview with reporters at the NFL owner’s meetings on Monday, Khan stated that the Steelers have until May 2 to finalize their decision on the option
While Khan declined to delve into specific negotiations regarding players, he emphasized the upcoming deadline for making a choice. Harris’ fifth-year option would amount to $6.790 million, as he has not earned a Pro Bowl selection outright according to league criteria. Despite being named an alternate to one Pro Bowl, this designation does not impact the price of his fifth-year option. Nevertheless, Harris will eventually warrant compensation. With the running back market resetting in 2024, players like Saquon Barkley have capitalized on favorable deals. Speaking on the New Heights Podcast with the Kelce Brothers, Barkley included Harris among those he hopes will secure more lucrative contracts.
As the Steelers’ first-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, Harris has demonstrated strong performance in his initial three seasons with the team, despite facing challenges such as subpar offensive line support.
Khan echoed similar sentiments regarding Harris’ contract status during the NFL Combine in February.
