“Barry Douglas predicts England call-up for player sold by Jesse Marsch at Leeds United in 2022”
Jesse Marsch's tenure at Leeds United was undermined by his transfer dealings, contributing to the club's relegation to the Championship in the 2022-23 season.
In his first summer as Leeds United manager, Jesse Marsch sold Kalvin Phillips and Raphinha for £100 million.
He reinvested the money in several players he had previously worked with, such as Brenden Aaronson and Max Wober.
Rasmus Kristensen and Tyler Adams also joined the squad, alongside Marc Roca, Luis Sinisterra, and Weston McKennie, who were brought in during Marsch’s tenure.
However, all five of these players have since left the club, with Kristensen currently out on loan.
Despite the quality of the squad, Marsch’s tactical shortcomings, particularly his decision to eliminate width from Leeds’ playing style, contributed to the team’s relegation.
This occurred even though Marsch was sacked in February of the 2022-23 season.
Under Marsch’s management, some less prominent player sales have turned out to be significant misjudgments.
One notable example is Italian goalkeeper Elia Caprile, who is now excelling at the top of Serie A with Napoli under Antonio Conte.
Another regrettable sale was left-back Leif Davis, who has become a standout player for Ipswich Town.
Davis was instrumental in Ipswich’s promotions, first from League One and then from the Championship to the Premier League.
Now 24, Davis has signed a four-year contract with Ipswich after playing a key role in their success.
Following the signing, Davis shared his excitement on Instagram, saying: “Delighted to sign 4 more years! The last 2 years of playing for this amazing club made this decision very easy for me.
Can’t wait to make more memories of a lifetime. Thank you for all the love and support. 2028.”
Many former Leeds teammates, including Barry Douglas, responded to Davis’ post.
Douglas, who mentored Davis during their time together at Elland Road, recently joined St. Johnstone and predicted that Davis would soon earn a call-up to the England national team.
Others who commented on the post included Dom Matteo, Tyler Roberts, Sean McGurk, and Sam Greenwood, with the latter three having played alongside Davis during his time with Leeds’ U21 team.
