Everton’s number nine has been their first-choice striker for much of the season but has once again fallen short of expectations, managing only two goals across all competitions so far.

Responding to a fan query on the BBC Sport website (26 November) about the future of the 27-year-old, BBC journalist Phil McNulty shared his perspective.

“[Calvert-Lewin] never looks fully confident in one-on-one situations – the kind natural strikers usually relish,” he stated.

“Only Carlo Ancelotti seemed to find a solution to that. My view is that he’s struggling in a team lacking creativity, is short on confidence, and faces ongoing speculation about his future.

“He has shown no willingness to sign a new contract at Everton, so perhaps his time at the club is naturally coming to an end.”

While there have been reports of ongoing negotiations for the striker to extend his stay at Goodison Park, it may be in Everton’s best interest to sell him in January and maximize their return.

Calvert-Lewin has consistently fallen short of the standards expected of a Premier League striker, often underperforming when given opportunities.

Many fans might think it’s unwise for Everton to part ways with him, but with players like Youssef Chermiti and Armando Broja set to return to the first-team fold soon, a January sale could be the most practical solution.

Given his contract is set to expire at the end of the season, Everton risk losing him for nothing if they don’t act quickly.

While the transfer fee would likely be modest, it’s better than allowing him to leave on a free transfer.

There’s still time for things to take a different turn, but with interest from foreign clubs such as Juventus [Tutto Juve, 15 October], Sean Dyche must decide on Calvert-Lewin’s future swiftly.
