Despite welcoming a host of new arrivals to Ibrox over the summer, the Scottish manager has endured a difficult start, securing only three victories from his opening eight matches in charge.

A number of the club’s summer recruits have struggled to hit the ground running, with Joe Rothwell among those singled out for criticism.

The midfielder has featured frequently since joining from Bournemouth, but his displays have been far from convincing.

Rothwell had previously impressed during a loan spell at Leeds United, playing a key role in helping the Yorkshire side secure promotion back to the Premier League.

However, his early outings for Rangers have been disappointing, and his lack of sharpness has not gone unnoticed.

Over the weekend against Alloa Athletic, Rothwell’s poor performance almost resulted in a red card, while against Brugge he once again struggled to make an impact.

During the half-time interval of Rangers’ clash on 19 August, BBC Sportsound presenter Kenny Macintyre questioned both Rothwell’s fitness and teammate Max Aarons’ suitability at this level.

Macintyre remarked: “Joe Rothwell, for me, has looked knackered in every game. Max Aarons, in every game, has looked out of his depth. I know it’s early days, but it’s a huge concern.”

So far this season, Rothwell has yet to complete a full 90 minutes in a Rangers shirt, which stands in stark contrast to his time at Leeds, where he regularly lasted the duration of matches.

This has sparked growing concerns regarding his fitness levels. If Rothwell is indeed unfit, it represents a significant problem for Rangers, particularly with a congested fixture list ahead.

With expectation levels high at Ibrox, the Gers cannot afford to carry underperforming players, and the midfielder’s struggles are fast becoming a worrying narrative at the start of the campaign.
