“Biggest Enigma” – McGinn Casts Doubt on Need to Sell Rangers Star This Summer

Nigerian forward Cyriel Dessers has maintained his spot in Rangers’ starting lineup, recently featuring in the goalless Europa League draw against Athletic Club on 10 April.

As Barry Ferguson’s side prepares to travel to San Mames for the second leg of the quarter-final clash on Thursday (17 April), the 30-year-old striker is expected to be involved once again.

However, with the season approaching its conclusion and the potential for a significant shake-up due to an impending takeover, Dessers’ future at Ibrox is far from certain.

There’s growing speculation that Rangers may look to offload the former Cremonese striker this summer, as part of what could be a broader squad overhaul.

Former St Mirren player Stephen McGinn has weighed in on the situation, expressing uncertainty over Dessers’ future.

Speaking on the Go Radio Football Show (15 April), McGinn described the forward as “the biggest enigma” in the current Rangers squad.

While acknowledging Dessers’ moments of impact—particularly his effort against Athletic, where he led the line alone even when the team went down to 10 men—McGinn also highlighted inconsistencies in his hold-up play.

“The biggest enigma in the Rangers team would be what you would do with Dessers,” McGinn said. “He occupied the Athletic defenders on his own, even with 10 men.

But some of his hold-up play was questionable. For all the changes needed in the summer, is he really the biggest issue in the squad?”

Despite calls from some quarters for Dessers to be moved on, interim boss Barry Ferguson has shown a level of trust in the Nigerian.

Alternatives, like 22-year-old Hamza Igamane, have failed to make a lasting impression.

Though Igamane started the season brightly and briefly pushed Dessers down the pecking order, his recent form and lack of goals have seen his role diminish.

While Dessers has produced some solid performances under Ferguson, his inconsistency in front of goal continues to frustrate supporters.

Despite getting into good positions, he often fails to convert key chances—something that has made him a target for criticism throughout the campaign.

Looking ahead, Rangers may consider investing in a more clinical striker, with Igamane potentially developing into the club’s long-term option.

However, Dessers, now 30, may be reluctant to accept a backup role, raising the possibility of a summer departure if he seeks regular first-team football elsewhere.
