Report: Steve Cooper’s Transfer Target Revealed as Leicester City Eyes Sunderland Midfielder
Leicester City has been active in the summer transfer window as they prepare for their return to the Premier League.
They have already secured the signings of Abdul Fatawu, Michael Golding, Bobby De Cordova-Reid, and Caleb Okoli under manager Steve Cooper.
However, more additions are expected before the transfer deadline as Leicester aims to bolster four key positions: left-back, central midfielder, winger, and striker.
The club has been linked with numerous potential signings in their quest to strengthen the squad.
Notably, Leicester has made a bid for Crystal Palace’s Jordan Ayew, who may be available for a reduced fee due to his current contract situation and potential limited playing time at Selhurst Park in the upcoming season.
Additionally, Cooper is competing with Ajax for Wout Weghorst, who is likely to leave Burnley this window.
Recently, a new target has emerged on Leicester’s radar. The Foxes are particularly keen on reinforcing their midfield for the 2024/25 season, especially after Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, who scored 12 goals and provided 15 assists during their promotion campaign, moved to Chelsea.
To fill this gap, Leicester is reportedly interested in Sunderland midfielder Pierre Ekwah.
According to Africa Foot, Cooper has urged Leicester’s owners to pursue Ekwah, with club scouts already reaching out to his representatives for more information.
Pierre Ekwah started his career in France, gaining recognition in FC Nantes’ academy before moving to Chelsea in 2020, where he played for their youth teams.
During his time with Chelsea’s U18 side, Ekwah scored five goals and assisted two in 24 games. In 2021, he transferred to West Ham United, excelling at the U21 level with nine goals and three assists in 39 matches.
In January 2023, Ekwah joined Sunderland for an undisclosed fee and has since become a regular starter, making 40 appearances in the 2023/24 season.
As a defensive midfielder who can also play slightly forward, Ekwah offers a solid attacking threat and could serve as a suitable replacement for Dewsbury-Hall in Leicester’s midfield.
