West Ham United could be set for another goalkeeping shake-up, just months after spending a club-record £20 million to sign Mads Hermansen from Leicester City.

The Danish goalkeeper’s future has quickly become uncertain following a poor start to life in East London.

When Graham Potter allowed Lukasz Fabianski to leave last summer, the Hammers were already seeking a new number one.

Alphonse Areola’s inconsistent form under Potter led the club to explore several options, including Victor John, Djordje Petrovic, and Robert Sanchez.

However, Potter was adamant about bringing in Hermansen — a player recommended by incoming goalkeeping coach Casper Ankergren, who had previously worked with him at Brøndby.

Initially, Leicester demanded £35 million for Hermansen, but West Ham eventually secured his signature for £20 million after the Foxes reduced their asking price.

The move made him the most expensive goalkeeper in West Ham’s history, and Potter immediately installed him as the first-choice keeper. Yet, the decision quickly backfired.

Hermansen’s debut was disastrous, with errors contributing to a 3-0 loss against Sunderland. His performances didn’t improve, and his lack of height became a glaring weakness, especially during set pieces.

Opponents began targeting him regularly, prompting Potter to drop him for Areola before being dismissed himself.

After Nuno Espírito Santo took over, Areola was reinstated as West Ham’s number one — a significant decision considering Nuno’s own background as a former goalkeeper.

Since then, Hermansen has remained on the bench, with his role at the club diminishing rapidly.

Compounding matters, Fabianski — who was brought back as cover — has suffered a back injury, forcing the club to recall academy prospect Finlay Herrick.

The youngster is highly rated and tipped to be the club’s future number one.

With Areola performing well and the club facing financial pressures of nearly £100 million in losses, West Ham are now open to selling Hermansen in January or loaning him out to rebuild his confidence and market value.

While Hermansen remains a talented shot-stopper, his struggles with aerial balls have left his Premier League future in serious doubt.
