Newcastle United are not expected to make a move to bring Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson back to St James’ Park next year, according to journalist David Ornstein.

Despite admiration for Anderson’s impressive form this season, the Magpies are unlikely to be involved in the race for the England international, with several Premier League and European clubs monitoring his situation.

While a return would be warmly welcomed on an emotional level, the financial realities surrounding any potential deal appear to put it beyond Newcastle’s reach.

A graduate of Newcastle’s academy, Anderson left his boyhood club in the summer of 2024 in a £35 million transfer to Nottingham Forest, having made 55 senior appearances for the first team.

At the time, the move was driven largely by financial necessity rather than sporting reasons, with Newcastle needing to comply with the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules.

Since his departure, Anderson’s reputation has continued to grow rapidly.

His performances at Forest have marked him out as one of the most consistent young midfielders in the league, and his market value is now thought to have risen significantly.

Reports suggest Forest could demand a fee in the region of £100 million should they consider selling the 23-year-old, a figure that would likely deter many suitors, including Newcastle.

Speaking on NBC Sports, Ornstein explained that while Newcastle would love the idea of re-signing their former midfielder, it is not something they realistically expect to pursue.

He noted that Anderson is attracting attention from clubs such as Manchester United, although Arsenal are not believed to be among those actively considering a move due to their already well-stocked midfield options.

Ornstein also highlighted that uncertainty surrounding managerial situations at several interested clubs could play a key role in determining Anderson’s next step.

A player of his profile is expected to seek stability and clarity before committing his future, making the coming months particularly important in shaping his decision-making process.

According to Ornstein, Arsenal are effectively the only club among the traditional elite without a clear need in midfield, while Newcastle’s interest is likely to be limited by finances rather than desire.

He added that Anderson will want assurances over the direction of any prospective club, especially with changes potentially looming in the dugout across the Premier League.

The journalist also suggested that next summer’s World Cup is unlikely to influence Anderson’s choice of destination, instead placing greater emphasis on club environment, leadership, and long-term vision.

Newcastle’s decision to sell Anderson in 2024 came during a period of intense financial pressure.

Despite the midfielder’s reluctance to leave, the club were forced into the sale to balance their books.

They also sanctioned the departure of winger Yankuba Minteh to Brighton in the same window, with the two transfers generating a combined £65 million in revenue.

Since then, both players have gone on to establish themselves at the highest level. Anderson, in particular, has made a strong impression internationally, earning six England call-ups under Thomas Tuchel.

His continued rise serves as a reminder of Newcastle’s strong academy production, even if a reunion with Anderson now appears increasingly unlikely.
