West Ham’s relegation fears deepen as problems on and off the pitch continue to mount
Former West Ham senior scout Mick Brown has claimed the club misjudged their Premier League prospects before the campaign began, believing there would be at least three teams worse than them over the course of the season.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Brown – who remains well connected at the London Stadium – revealed that this assumption has since backfired badly.
According to sources inside the club, senior figures have been taken aback by the strong performances of both Leeds United and Sunderland following their promotion.
Neither side was expected to adapt so quickly to life back in the top flight, yet their positive displays have altered the relegation picture significantly.
Those concerns were amplified at the weekend when West Ham were comprehensively beaten 3-0 by Wolves.
The result was particularly alarming given Wolves had collected just two points all season prior to the match, making the defeat one of the most damaging of the Hammers’ campaign so far.
As things stand, West Ham sit 18th in the Premier League table, four points behind Nottingham Forest.
Attention now turns to Tuesday night’s clash, which has all the hallmarks of a relegation six-pointer and could prove pivotal in shaping their survival hopes.
Brown previously told Football Insider on 2 January that West Ham’s issues run far deeper than the identity of the head coach, insisting that dismissing Nuno Espirito Santo would do little to resolve the underlying problems at the club.
Drawing on his experience of working alongside elite managers such as Sir Alex Ferguson and David Moyes, Brown suggested the mindset within the club has played a major role in their current predicament.
“West Ham are in serious trouble this year,” Brown said. “What I’m hearing is they didn’t expect Leeds and Sunderland to perform as well as they have.
They were effectively relying on there being three teams worse than them.
“Did they honestly think those clubs would just accept relegation and roll over? It’s astonishing to hear that kind of thinking.
“The moment you start approaching a season like that, you’re already in danger because it shows you’re not strong enough.
If you’re scanning the league hoping other teams fail so you can survive by default, it speaks volumes.
“What does that say about the ambition of the club or the mentality of the players? Hoping to stay up without properly investing is a huge red flag.
“When I left West Ham, I said they’d end up relegated within three years.
I didn’t know how accurate that prediction would be, but the problems there are enormous and they’re only escalating. It’s a mess.”
In the wake of the Wolves defeat, pressure has intensified on Nuno Espirito Santo, with large sections of the fanbase calling for his immediate dismissal.
While there is no indication of an imminent sacking, Brown warned that the situation could change quickly as scrutiny around the manager’s future grows.
With protests already directed at the club’s board, Brown noted that previous ownership responses to fan unrest have often involved removing the manager to deflect attention. That pattern, he suggested, could repeat itself.
Brown also told Football Insider on 3 January that former boss Slaven Bilic could be lined up as a potential replacement, ready to return should Nuno ultimately lose his job.
