Tottenham Hotspur have stepped up their efforts to land an “unpredictable” midfielder, after reportedly lodging an opening bid worth £61 million as they look to reinforce their engine room.
The north London club are keen to add quality in central midfield following mixed performances in that area this season.
Joao Palhinha, in particular, has come under scrutiny, with pundit Jamie Carragher openly critical of the Portuguese international after Tottenham’s narrow 1-0 defeat to Chelsea.
During that match, Palhinha opted for a safe backwards pass instead of progressing the ball into an attacking zone, a moment that clearly frustrated Carragher.
Reflecting on the incident, Carragher questioned the midfielder’s suitability for Tottenham’s style of play.
He suggested that courage alone is not enough at the highest level, insisting that quality is essential for a central midfielder at Spurs.
In his view, Palhinha lacked the ability to execute a forward-thinking pass in a key moment, choosing instead to recycle possession and halt the attacking momentum.
Despite the criticism, Palhinha remains an important figure under head coach Thomas Frank.
However, changes could still be on the horizon, with Yves Bissouma’s future at the club now in serious doubt.
Tottenham are reportedly prepared to sell the 29-year-old following an off-field issue, a decision that could leave Frank short of options in midfield.
As a result, Spurs have intensified their pursuit of Atletico Madrid’s highly-rated youngster Pablo Barrios.
Reports from Spain claim Tottenham have made a strong move by submitting an initial offer of €70 million, equivalent to around £61 million, in an attempt to prise the central midfielder away from the Spanish giants.
Even so, completing the deal may prove extremely challenging.
Atletico are reluctant to sanction Barrios’ departure and are well protected by a hefty €120 million (£105 million) release clause in his contract.
The La Liga side are understood to be unwilling to negotiate below that figure, meaning Tottenham may need to significantly raise their bid if they are serious about securing his signature.
Barrios has earned widespread praise for his all-round game. Scout Ben Mattinson has described him as an “unpredictable creative passer” with an excellent weight of pass, while also highlighting his eye for goal.
Defensively, the Spaniard is no slouch either, ranking highly for interceptions compared to his midfield peers.
The 22-year-old has been a key performer for Atletico this season, featuring regularly across competitions and impressing in the Champions League with a decisive display against PSV Eindhoven.
While Barrios would represent an exciting addition for Spurs, meeting Atletico’s demands could require Tottenham to break their transfer record to finalise the move.
