He has recently been linked with a potential switch to Tottenham Hotspur — and one former Rangers manager believes the moment may soon arrive for the Ibrox hierarchy to cash in on one of their most valuable players.

Nico Raskin’s season has been something of a rollercoaster to this point. Early in the campaign, he found himself dropped entirely from matchday squads by former head coach Russell Martin.

Yet despite that setback, his form for the Belgian national team has been strong, and his club performances have begun trending upward again under new boss Danny Rohl.

Transfer speculation surrounded Raskin throughout the summer window, and now fresh reports have begun to re-emerge.

Tottenham have been credited with interest in the energetic midfielder — a player Barry Ferguson worked closely with during his interim spell in charge during the latter stages of last season.

Ferguson, who remains a club ambassador and understands well how important Raskin is to the current squad, acknowledged on Go Radio that a future sale is inevitable, even if Rangers would prefer to delay it.

Host Paul Cooney posed the question: “You wouldn’t want to lose Nico Raskin in January. They say Spurs are lining up a bid for him?”

Ferguson replied: “Yeah, I’ve seen those reports. It was great to see him back near his best last weekend against Dundee. I’ve always said Nico has the quality required to play at the highest level.

“Ideally, I’d love him to stay at Rangers. But long-term, the club will need to cash in eventually, and it doesn’t surprise me that top teams are watching him.

I’d like to see him remain for the rest of the season because he would be extremely difficult to replace.

“He’s come through a really difficult spell earlier in the season. He was out of the starting eleven, even left out of the squad completely.

He hasn’t consistently shown his best form, but against Dundee you could clearly see him getting back there — and he brings a goal threat as well.”

What Nico Raskin has said

Charlie Mulgrew, the former Celtic and Scotland defender, offered a similar view. He insisted: “Rangers absolutely cannot afford to lose him.

They’re only just beginning to find rhythm again and look improved under Danny Rohl. Losing Raskin now would be the last thing they need.”

Meanwhile, Thierry Raskin, Nico’s father, gave insight into his son’s thinking while speaking to dhnet.be during the midfielder’s time with the Belgian national team.

He said: “During a season that finishes with a World Cup, any decision requires serious thought. But the initial plan is to stay, especially now that there’s a new coach in Danny Rohl who wants to build something impressive.”

As Nico prepared for Belgium’s match against Liechtenstein at his former home ground, Standard Liège, Thierry added: “It will be a special moment for him. He grew up at Standard, played there, and still follows them closely.

Just recently, when we spoke, he told me he was watching their match. He knows what’s expected of him with the national team, and he enjoys proving himself. I can sense he’s thriving when he joins up with Belgium.”
