Speaking on Match of the Day, Alan Shearer admitted he has been struck by the transformation in West Ham’s mindset.
The former England striker reflected on the performance at Turf Moor and highlighted what he sees as a dramatic improvement in attitude.
After the heavy 3-0 defeat to Wolves last month, Shearer believed relegation was almost inevitable. The display that day had convinced him there was no way back.
Now, his outlook has shifted considerably.
“I think there’s been a huge shift in attitude,” Shearer said. “A month ago, I thought they were gone. I thought there was no coming back from that performance and that result against Wolves.”
He praised the renewed positivity in their play, noting that “everything was on the front foot, everything was positive,” before describing the Burnley result as “another big, big win for Nuno and West Ham.”
Despite the upturn, the battle is far from over. Opta’s supercomputer still assigns West Ham a 72.48% probability of relegation. That figure, however, has steadily decreased in recent weeks, offering encouragement.
There is no room for complacency, but confidence is clearly growing ahead of Tuesday’s clash with Manchester United.
