Everton step up January move for Youssef En-Nesyri
David Moyes is eager to add a proven goalscorer as Everton continue their push towards a potential European place in the Premier League this season.
The Toffees made their move on Thursday, submitting a loan proposal for Youssef En-Nesyri that was accepted by Fenerbahce.
However, while the Turkish club are open to the deal, the Morocco international himself is yet to be convinced about a switch to English football.
En-Nesyri is currently focused on international duty and is preparing for Sunday’s Africa Cup of Nations final, but attention is expected to swiftly turn to his club future once the tournament concludes, with fresh details now surfacing from Turkey.
Everton have been struggling for cutting edge in recent weeks, particularly with key players such as Iliman Ndiaye and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall unavailable.
Beto and Thierno Barry have failed to fully convince, and En-Nesyri would be almost certain to step straight into Moyes’ starting XI should the move go through.
Turkish journalist Yagiz Sabuncuoglu reports that Everton’s offer is worth £3.9 million for a loan covering the remainder of the campaign.
Crucially, the agreement also includes an option to make the transfer permanent in the summer for a further £17.3 million.
Despite Fenerbahce’s willingness to proceed, the transfer is still some distance from being finalised, largely due to complications surrounding the player’s personal decision.
One potential stumbling block is En-Nesyri’s reluctance to leave Turkey, where he has spent several seasons.
It has been suggested that he prefers warmer climates and is keen on destinations where sandals are more suitable attire, something Merseyside in the depths of winter does not exactly offer.
Nevertheless, Moyes will be urging Angus Kinnear and Everton’s recruitment team to find a solution, with the financial backing of the Friedkin Group already in place.
Funds appear to be available, leaving the challenge of convincing the striker that this is the right sporting move.
Even if Beto departs before the window closes, Everton’s need for another forward is clear, as the side continue to miss chances. Once AFCON ends, expect Everton to intensify to secure En-Nesyri’s signature.
