Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly come out on top in a North London tussle with Arsenal to secure the signature of highly rated Hearts striker James Wilson, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.
The 18-year-old had attracted serious interest from both Spurs and the Gunners after emerging as one of the most exciting young talents in Scottish football.
Hearts themselves had confirmed that the two Premier League clubs were tracking Wilson, whose rapid development has caught the eye despite his limited involvement at senior level for a Hearts side currently leading the Scottish Premiership.
Wilson is set to move to North London initially on loan, with Tottenham negotiating an option to make the deal permanent in the future.
That structure means the teenager will need to prove his worth during his time in England if he is to earn a long-term stay.
Should Spurs activate the buy option, Wilson could find himself competing with Dominic Solanke for the central striker role in the years ahead.
Romano confirmed the deal on social media, stating that Tottenham had agreed terms with Hearts, while Arsenal had only offered the forward a trial.
Spurs’ proposal of a loan with an option to buy ultimately proved decisive, with a medical already underway and formal steps expected to follow shortly.
In the short term, Wilson is likely to be integrated into Tottenham’s Under-21 setup as part of the club’s long-term development plan.
However, there is widespread belief that he possesses the talent to progress rapidly, and he would join a growing list of young players signed by Spurs with an eye on future first-team impact.
Although his senior appearances this season have largely come in the Scottish League Cup, Wilson has still impressed, scoring twice in four outings.
At youth level, his numbers are even more eye-catching. He netted 14 goals and provided six assists in 26 matches in the Scottish Lowland League, underlining his attacking threat.
On the international stage, Wilson has also delivered, scoring four goals in five appearances for Scotland’s Under-21s. Primarily a number nine, he is also comfortable operating out wide and is praised for his sharp movement and clinical finishing in front of goal.
