Lopetegui eyes potential free agent striker signing for West Ham after Fullkrug injury setback – report

West Ham United and manager Julen Lopetegui are weighing the option of signing a free agent striker following the injury to summer signing Niclas Fullkrug.
Fullkrug Suffers Injury While on International Duty
Fullkrug, who joined West Ham from Borussia Dortmund for £27 million in early August, picked up an Achilles tendon injury while with the German national team.
As a result, he missed Germany’s 2-2 draw with the Netherlands.
The 31-year-old, who has made three substitute appearances in the Premier League so far, totaling 63 minutes, will also be unavailable for West Ham’s upcoming match against Fulham.
Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann provided an update on Fullkrug’s condition, explaining the injury: “Unfortunately, the area is a bit problematic because it’s the transition to the Achilles tendon at the bottom of the calf.
If something were to happen, it would be long-term. That’s why we’re not taking any risks. He will have to take a few days off.”
Fullkrug has now returned to West Ham for further medical evaluation, with Lopetegui waiting for a full diagnosis.
West Ham insider ExWHUemployee confirmed the situation: “A top source confirmed that Fullkrug will be out for Germany’s game and has returned to West Ham for treatment.
The injury appears to involve both the Achilles tendon and the calf. The club will monitor and scan the injury to assess its severity.”
West Ham Considering a Free Agent Signing
In response to Fullkrug’s injury, West Ham may look to the free agent market as a solution.
The club has until the Premier League squad submission deadline on Friday to make any additions.
According to GiveMeSport, West Ham are exploring the idea of signing a free agent striker, depending on the seriousness of Fullkrug’s injury.

Among the names considered was ex-Barcelona forward Memphis Depay, although he has since signed with Corinthians.
In the meantime, Danny Ings, currently out of favor, could also step in to prove his worth under Lopetegui if West Ham decides not to pursue a free agent.
West Ham have also been in discussions with former Sheffield United defender John Egan, who recently played in a closed-door friendly for the club against Dagenham and Redbridge.
However, any final decision on adding a striker will depend on the extent of Fullkrug’s injury and Lopetegui’s assessment of the team’s needs moving forward.
