West Ham’s early struggles under Julen Lopetegui in the 2024/25 season set a discouraging tone, and although Graham Potter arrived in January to stabilise the side, the team still appears far from competing for trophies or securing a European spot.

Now, former striker Tony Cascarino has delivered a scathing assessment of the mood surrounding the club in East London.

Cascarino Claims Potter Has Drained Energy From West Ham Fans

Speaking on his talkSPORT show on 20 July, Cascarino reflected on his playing days, recalling how intimidating it used to be to visit West Ham, with their passionate supporters creating a fierce atmosphere.

However, he noted a significant change in the energy from the stands toward the end of last season, pointing the finger at Potter’s style of play.

“I went two or three times before the end of the season,” Cascarino said. “You arrive at Westfield, and all the bars are packed, there’s a real buzz. But once you’re in the stadium—it’s flat!

“That energy just drains away. Potter needs to win the fans over with a more exciting style of football.”

Potter did enjoy a thrilling 3-2 victory over Fulham in his first home match back in January, but that was one of just two home wins under his management.

The pressure won’t ease anytime soon, with Chelsea, Tottenham, Crystal Palace, and Brentford all visiting the London Stadium early in the season.

Creative Signings Urgently Needed

Potter has already made defensive reinforcements, bringing in El Hadji Malick Diouf and Jean-Clair Todibo, while Kyle Walker-Peters arrived on a free transfer.

These additions will help shore up the backline.

But what West Ham really lack is creativity in attack. They managed only 46 goals across 38 league games last season and have since sold their key playmaker, Mohammed Kudus.

Their strikers underperformed, leaving Jarrod Bowen as the only consistent goal threat.

Potter must now prioritise attacking signings—players with flair and explosiveness who can excite the fans and reinvigorate the matchday atmosphere.

West Ham supporters expect entertaining football. If Potter’s side fails to deliver in the opening fixtures, he could quickly find himself under growing pressure.
