Tottenham Hotspur Finalise Permanent Signing of Kevin Danso

Tottenham Hotspur have officially completed the permanent signing of centre-back Kevin Danso after triggering the obligation to buy clause in his initial loan agreement.

On Saturday morning, the north London club issued a ‘player update’ outlining the status of several first-team players, confirming departures and those remaining with the squad.

Among the key updates were developments regarding Danso and midfielder Pierre-Emile Højbjerg, who had been on loan at Marseille throughout the season.

The club’s statement read: “As previously announced, Pierre-Emile Højbjerg’s loan to Marseille will become a permanent transfer this summer, while Kevin Danso’s loan to us from RC Lens becomes a permanent move.”

While Tottenham did not disclose the financial details of Danso’s transfer, multiple reports suggest that the fee paid to Lens is around £21 million.

Danso initially joined Spurs in early February amid a defensive crisis that left Ange Postecoglou short of options at the back.

The 26-year-old wasted no time integrating into the squad, making his debut by playing a full 90 minutes in Spurs’ heavy 4-0 defeat to Liverpool in the FA Cup at Anfield.

From there, he went on to make 15 appearances across all competitions before the season concluded, including a brief appearance in the Europa Cup final against Manchester United, where Spurs emerged victorious.

An Austrian international, Danso is a product of the FC Augsburg academy and had a previous stint in the Premier League with Southampton during the 2019/20 season.

The Saints held an option to make that move permanent but declined, and Danso later moved to Lens in 2021.

During his time in France, Danso made 128 appearances for RC Lens and was a standout performer, earning a spot in the Ligue 1 Team of the Year in 2023.

He also featured in the UEFA Champions League, making six appearances during the group stage of the 2023 tournament, experience that should prove valuable to Postecoglou’s Spurs side in the coming campaign.

Although Danso’s move to Spurs was met with optimism by some, his early performances drew criticism.

Former Watford striker Troy Deeney voiced doubts on talkSPORT, expressing skepticism about Danso’s Premier League capabilities and questioning Spurs’ £21 million investment.

Deeney commented: “None of the players they’ve signed have really made an impact. Spurs fans won’t like to hear it, but this is the truth. Danso was nearly off to Wolves — that should say enough.

“He was at Southampton when I was running past him, and I can’t run past anyone. You’ve wasted money.

Then there’s Dragusin — £25 million on him. That’s £50 million spent on two centre-backs who aren’t good enough.

“You have to question the recruitment. Those two defenders, I don’t think they’re cut out for the Premier League. I’ve seen enough football to say that.”

Despite early criticism, Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou defended Danso after his debut against Liverpool, saying: “Yeah, they did OK.

Kevin was really positive, as was Maty. It’s not ideal, throwing players into a game after just one or two training sessions.

“We’re facing challenges with maintaining consistency and fluency while constantly adjusting the lineup due to injuries. But I thought they both handled themselves well.”

With the move now permanent, Tottenham will hope Danso’s adaptation continues to improve and that he becomes a vital part of their backline moving forward.
