Penrith Panthers coach Ivan Cleary delivered a frosty press conference on Tuesday, repeatedly shutting down questions regarding 22-year-old star Taylan May’s domestic violence charges. The young winger has pleaded not guilty to charges of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and two counts of stalking or intimidating another person with the intention of causing them to fear physical or mental harm. The allegations claim he punched his wife and subsequently stalked her.
As a result, May has been stood down under the NRL’s “no-fault stand down” rules and will next appear in court in March 2025. With May sidelined for the remainder of the season and until his court case concludes, the Panthers are in discussions with the NRL about potential salary cap relief, as reported by the Sydney Morning Herald.
Despite the significant impact on the team, Cleary was resolute in his refusal to address May’s situation during the press conference. When asked if he was disappointed about May’s absence, Cleary responded curtly, “We already said I’m not going to mention it. I’m not going to talk about it mate.” He maintained this stance as questions continued to roll in, adding, “How many times do I have to say it? I’m not talking about it.”
Journalists persisted, questioning Cleary’s refusal to discuss the absence of a key player, even without delving into the legal case itself. Cleary remained steadfast, reiterating, “It’s a legal matter.”
Eventually, a club staffer intervened, stating that the club had already released a statement and no further comments would be made.
