After a somewhat mixed transfer window, Tottenham Hotspur have strengthened their attacking options by securing the £55 million signing of Mohammed Kudus from West Ham United.
The Ghanaian international brings versatility to Spurs’ frontline, with the ability to play across multiple attacking positions—on either wing, as a number ten, and even as a central striker.
While Kudus is adaptable, he has most frequently featured on the right flank throughout his career, having made 50 appearances there compared to 19 on the left, and is expected to primarily provide competition in that area at Tottenham.
The arrival of Kudus will intensify competition within the squad, particularly impacting Brennan Johnson and Wilson Odobert.
Johnson, who netted 18 goals last season—including the decisive strike in Tottenham’s Europa League final win in Bilbao—showed promise but was also inconsistent at times, drawing criticism from pundits like Jamie O’Hara.
Odobert, on the other hand, endured a challenging debut season at the club due to persistent injury problems, most notably a hamstring issue that sidelined him for three months.
Despite the setbacks, the young French winger still managed to score three goals and remains highly regarded within the club.
According to journalist Tom Barclay, Spurs are not ready to give up on the 20-year-old and still view him as a player with strong potential.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Barclay shared insights into the club’s mindset, saying: “Wilson Odobert, along with Mathys Tel, performed fairly well at the Under-21 Euros.
Apart from that AZ Alkmaar home game where he scored twice, we didn’t really get to see the best of him because of his hamstring injuries.
But Spurs still have high hopes for him and are in no rush to move him on.”
Despite a frustrating start in North London, Odobert received a call-up to France’s Under-21 squad this summer and featured in the side that reached the semi-finals of the European Championship, where they were eventually eliminated by Germany.
Though he has not yet returned to training, teammate Dominic Solanke jokingly urged him to come back soon in a message posted from Hotspur Way.
With Thomas Frank now at the helm, Odobert may benefit from the Danish manager’s strong reputation for nurturing young talent.
The winger, who is also capable of operating as a central playmaker, will be hoping to kick on in his second season and prove his worth under the new regime.
