After progressing through Middlesbrough’s youth ranks, the 23-year-old made his senior debut in 2021.

Struggling for consistent minutes at the Riverside Stadium early on, he spent a loan spell with Scunthorpe United to gain regular playing time and further his development.

Former scout Brown has praised Hackney as a “very talented” player, suggesting Goodison Park could be the ideal next step in his career.

Brown explained:

“Hayden Hackney is a very talented player who I think can develop into a strong Premier League performer.

From what I’m told, he’s ready to take that step up. With Ipswich’s move falling through, other clubs will be on alert, and Everton are one of them, as Moyes is looking to bolster his midfield.

“Given the price, Everton believe he’s worth taking a chance on. He’s an upgrade on their long-term options and would benefit from playing at that level.

If they feel the valuation is fair, I could definitely see them hijacking the deal.”

Hackney is valued at roughly £10m by Transfermarkt and has two years remaining on his contract, which means Middlesbrough may look to sell this summer to maximise his market value.

The England youth international is comfortable operating as a defensive midfielder or in a box-to-box capacity.

At present, Everton’s main midfielders are Idrissa Gueye and James Garner, with Carlos Alcaraz capable of filling in if required — though he is more naturally suited to an advanced central role.

Tim Iroegbunam provides another option, but his lack of consistent top-flight experience means the Toffees are still in need of additional reinforcements in the centre of the park.
