Yet despite Areola’s standout display, attention has quickly shifted to the future of the goalkeeper signed in the summer to challenge him — a player who may already be nearing the exit door.
Hermansen Could Be Set for a Swift Departure
One of Graham Potter’s final big calls before his dismissal was to demote Areola and promote summer arrival Mads Hermansen as West Ham’s new No.1.
Nuno Espírito Santo has since overturned that decision and firmly re-established Areola as his preferred choice.
Hermansen, signed from relegated Leicester City for close to £20 million, has endured a punishing introduction to life in east London.
The Dane conceded 11 of the 27 goals West Ham allowed in the early stages of the season, and after just four Premier League outings, he was dropped in favour of Areola — who has retained the starting spot ever since.
Although Areola lost four of his first five games upon returning to the lineup, his performances have improved sharply.
In recent weeks he has been one of the few consistent and dependable figures in the squad, making crucial saves and keeping West Ham competitive in matches they might otherwise have lost.
Hermansen, meanwhile, remains rooted to the bench, unable to reclaim his place either at club level or internationally, where he continues to sit behind Kasper Schmeichel in the pecking order for Denmark.
According to Clinton Morrison, the situation may soon come to a breaking point. Speaking on BBC 5 Live during the loss to Liverpool, he said via GIVEMESPORT: “Alphonse Areola has made the jersey his own.
West Ham brought in Mads Hermansen and paid a lot of money, and now it looks like he could be on the way as he’s not playing any football.”
He added: “Areola deserves to be number one — big saves last week to earn them a draw, and he’s already produced two crucial saves today.”
With January approaching and no clear route back into the side, a winter departure for Hermansen now feels entirely plausible — a rapid and disappointing end to a move that once promised much.
