West Ham suffer underwhelming summer window with departures outweighing arrivals.
A total of 15 players from last season’s West Ham squad departed during the summer, headlined by Mohammed Kudus’ £55million switch to Tottenham.
Concerns had been growing in recent weeks about a lack of depth in midfield, but those fears were partly eased with the £40million capture of Mateus Fernandes from Southampton.
With more than 23 deals completed across both incomings and outgoings, the Irons’ squad has undergone a major reshaping. West Ham Zone takes a look at what their team is valued at now.
Squad valued at £323million
The club’s only deadline day arrival was Igor Julio, signed on loan after the Hammers beat Crystal Palace to his signature.
The Brazilian had even undergone a medical in South London, but West Ham pushed the move through after Nayef Aguerd left for Marseille in a £19.9million transfer.
His departure took overall sales income past £70million.
Many fans expected a busier deadline day, but with just one addition confirmed, frustration boiled over at the London Stadium. Transfermarkt now values West Ham’s squad at £323million.
Lucas Paqueta remains the second-most valuable player in the side, coming in at just over £24m, while manager Graham Potter will also be relieved that Jarrod Bowen stayed put, with the forward still a crucial figure.
At the other end of the scale, Wes Foderingham (£348,000), Freddie Potts (£1.5m), and Callum Marshall (£1.5m) sit among the lowest-valued members.
Other senior players such as Callum Wilson (£6.95m), James Ward-Prowse (£6.95m), and Andy Irving (£3.5m) also carry relatively modest values.
Comparing to last season
The Hammers’ squad value has taken a hit since last year, dropping by £131million following the exits of Aguerd, Kudus, Edson Alvarez, Carlos Soler, and Evan Ferguson.
New arrivals have added just £89million in value, leaving the squad £42million worse off overall. Potter is therefore left with a weaker side than at the start of the window, despite the high hopes going into deadline day.
West Ham also missed out on several targets, including Axel Disasi, who was a prime defensive option but opted to remain at Chelsea despite limited opportunities.
Chairman David Sullivan will now be hoping that the team’s impressive 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest was a sign of stability, rather than a brief high point before a potential relegation battle.
