Ange Postecoglou’s team selection for Tottenham’s Europa League semi-final first leg against Bodo/Glimt has sparked plenty of discussion, with six changes made from the side that suffered a 5-1 defeat to Liverpool on Sunday.

Notably, young midfielder Lucas Bergvall is absent from the squad altogether due to an ankle injury.

Yves Bissouma replaces Bergvall in midfield, a somewhat unexpected choice given that the Mali international has featured in just one of Spurs’ last five matches.

Despite limited recent involvement, Postecoglou has opted to trust Bissouma to line up alongside Rodrigo Bentancur and James Maddison.

Up front, Richarlison returns to the starting XI and takes up a position on the left wing.

While the Brazilian is more commonly used as a centre-forward, he will be part of a front three that also includes Dominic Solanke and Brennan Johnson as Spurs aim to gain the upper hand in the tie.

Ahead of the match, Postecoglou explained his decision to include Bissouma in the midfield trio, citing tactical balance as a key factor.

“I just think the balance of our midfield is important with what we’re facing tonight,” he said. “Lucas gave us that balance previously, and Biss will bring the qualities we need in his absence.”

As for Richarlison, Postecoglou highlighted the need for intensity and attacking pressure as the rationale behind his selection.

“We need to be aggressive tonight,” he stated. “Richy has been building his fitness, and although he usually plays centrally, he’s often featured on the left throughout his career.

His experience and movement around the box can really help us apply pressure in key areas.”

Postecoglou also confirmed why Bergvall was missing from the squad.

“Unfortunately, Lucas picked up an injury in training yesterday,” he revealed. “He tweaked his ankle and won’t be available tonight.

It’s disappointing for him—he’s been excellent this season and is really upset to miss out.”

Tottenham will be hoping the changes pay off as they look to take a positive result into the second leg of their semi-final clash.
