Eddie Howe Set to Receive Prestigious Honor After Guiding Newcastle United to Historic Trophy Win

Determining Eddie Howe's Place Among Newcastle United’s Greatest Managers Remains Subjective

Eddie Howe has firmly established himself among Newcastle United’s greatest managers, warranting a place on the club’s metaphorical Mount Rushmore alongside Kevin Keegan and Sir Bobby Robson.

The question remains—who would claim the fourth spot?

Howe has now achieved what neither Keegan nor Robson managed: delivering a major trophy to Newcastle United, a feat that will soon be officially recognized by the City of Newcastle.

While talk of a statue may be premature, his continued success could make such an honor inevitable.

Rather than being immortalized in bronze just yet, Howe is set to receive the Freedom of Newcastle, as reported by The Chronicle.

Newcastle City Council has nominated him for the prestigious honor, with Councillor Karen Kilgour leading the charge.

Kilgour spoke passionately about Howe’s impact on the club and the city:

“What Eddie has achieved at Newcastle United is nothing short of extraordinary, and I’m delighted to nominate him for the Freedom of the City.

“Newcastle United is woven into the fabric of our city, with the club’s fortunes deeply affecting the lives of supporters in Newcastle and around the world, myself included.

For generations, fans had never seen their beloved club lift a domestic trophy, but under his leadership, we now have cherished memories of an unforgettable day.

“Beyond winning the Carabao Cup, he stabilized the club upon his arrival and guided it toward a brighter future.

The disappointment of the 2023 final didn’t linger—it only motivated him, his team, and the fans to push even further.

“Throughout his tenure, he has conducted himself with grace and dignity, showing humility in success and composure in adversity.

He will forever be a hero to our city, and I’m incredibly proud to play a role in recognizing his accomplishments.”

In addition to Howe’s recognition, Big Dan Burn will be awarded the Freedom of Northumberland after his crucial header helped secure Newcastle’s Carabao Cup triumph.

Other notable recipients of the Freedom of Newcastle include former Magpies goalkeeper Shaka Hislop, ex-chairman Freddie Shepherd, and club legend Alan Shearer.

Newcastle United itself was granted Honorary Freedom of the City to mark its centenary, joining an eclectic list of honorees that even includes Greggs PLC.
