Eddie Howe has made no secret of his admiration for Anthony Elanga, so it came as little surprise when the Newcastle United manager leapt to the winger’s defence during his pre-match press conference on Friday.

The Magpies boss, who sanctioned the £55 million summer move for Elanga from Nottingham Forest, told reporters that the 22-year-old simply needs time to adapt to the “Newcastle Way.”

Howe stressed that this period of adjustment is a normal process for new arrivals and promised that the wait for Elanga to settle will be “really worth it” once he finds his rhythm.

At present, however, Elanga faces stiff competition for a place in Newcastle’s starting XI. The trio of Anthony Gordon, Jacob Murphy, and Harvey Barnes have all found the net in recent matches, putting them ahead of the Swede in the current pecking order.

Despite that, Howe has praised Elanga’s work ethic in training, revealing that his teammates are actively helping him to sharpen his attacking instincts and improve his decision-making in the final third.

Elanga’s next big opportunity could come in Wednesday’s Carabao Cup fourth-round tie against Tottenham Hotspur.

With a busy fixture list ahead—including two Premier League away matches and a Champions League showdown with Athletic Bilbao—Howe is expected to rotate his squad.

That could see Gordon and Murphy rested, opening the door for Elanga and Barnes to start on the wings.

The Newcastle boss may also opt to rest Nick Woltemade, potentially giving William Osula a rare start up front after his lively cameo in the win over Fulham.

The prospect of Elanga and Osula lining up together is particularly appealing given their long-standing friendship.

The pair have known each other since their youth, with Elanga recalling that Osula came on trial at Manchester United when he was just 12 years old.

“He’s like my little brother,” Elanga told club media following his move from Nottingham Forest.

“He spoke so highly of Newcastle, and he’s one of the reasons I wanted to join. He told me amazing things about the club, and I couldn’t wait to be here with him.”

That bond could translate into chemistry on the pitch as both players look to cement their places in Howe’s plans.

Motivation is also high for Osula, who joined Newcastle for £15 million last summer.

However, his game time may soon come under pressure, with Yoane Wissa closing in on a return from injury and Woltemade established as a regular option through the middle.

Howe believes such competition is exactly what the squad needs. He is confident that the internal battles for starting spots will elevate performances across the board, and with Elanga and Osula’s close relationship both on and off the pitch, he hopes it can spark fresh attacking energy as Newcastle seek to defend the Carabao Cup title they lifted last season.
