Luis Palma Set to Return to Celtic After Olympiacos Decision

Celtic have received confirmation from Olympiacos that the Greek club will not activate their option to purchase winger Luis Palma.

The Honduran international joined Olympiacos on loan in January, but has struggled to secure regular playing time, making just two starts during his brief stint in Athens.

Although Palma remains under contract with Celtic for another three years, reports suggest he is not part of Brendan Rodgers’ long-term plans.

Greek media now confirm that Olympiacos will not pay the £3.5 million required to make the deal permanent.

As a result, Palma is expected to return to Glasgow following the Greek Cup Final against OFI Crete later this month.

Palma was included in Olympiacos’ title celebrations last weekend, despite his limited involvement.

With just one league fixture remaining — a clash with Panathinaikos — his time in Greece appears to be coming to a quiet close.

Olympiacos manager Jose Luis Mendilibar had previously hinted at this outcome.

Speaking last month, he said: “I have already made my decisions about which players will stay and which will leave at the end of the season.

Richard Foster Backs Jack Butland to Bounce Back

Former Rangers defender Richard Foster believes Jack Butland will attract interest if he chooses to leave Ibrox this summer, but also thinks a spell on the sidelines could reignite his motivation to succeed with the club.

The ex-England goalkeeper has endured a challenging spell, committing several notable errors that led interim manager Barry Ferguson to temporarily replace him with Liam Kelly.

Kelly has since enjoyed a solid run of games, but Foster thinks the decision to take Butland out of the spotlight was the right call — and may even benefit the player in the long run.

Speaking on the Go Radio Football Show, Foster said: “I think Butland has already done enough to earn himself a move, should he want one.

Clubs won’t judge him based on the final few games — they’ve likely already made their assessments. If he’s keen to leave, I’ve no doubt he’ll have offers. He’s a top-class keeper.”

Foster continued: “He went through a rough patch and I agree with the decision to remove him from the team.

As a player, you sometimes believe you can play your way through a tough period, but it’s not always that simple. Sometimes stepping back is what you need.”

Looking ahead to the new season, Foster sees a strong battle brewing between Butland and Kelly: “If Butland stays, he’ll return to pre-season hungry to win back the No.1 jersey.

That competition could be a good thing for both goalkeepers. And if Butland has decided to move on, there will certainly be clubs eager to sign him.”

He added: “Deep down, he might have been relieved to be taken out of the firing line.

While he wasn’t making mistakes every week, the ones he did make were quite basic for someone of his calibre. Whether he stays or leaves, I expect him to be determined and in demand.”
