Everton F.C. are preparing to explore a summer swoop for John Stones, with David Moyes reportedly eager to bring the experienced defender to Merseyside ahead of next season.

Toffees targeting defensive reinforcements

Moyes has recently deployed Jarrad Branthwaite at left-back, including in the narrow 1-0 defeat to Manchester United F.C.. While the 23-year-old has filled in admirably, it is not his natural position.

Branthwaite has since admitted that although he prefers playing at centre-back, he is willing to operate out wide if it benefits the team and ensures he remains in the starting lineup.

With Branthwaite shifted across the back line and Michael Keane approaching the end of his contract this summer, Everton are expected to strengthen in central defence. Several names have already emerged as potential additions.

Among them is Marcos Senesi of AFC Bournemouth, whose contract situation could make him an affordable option.

However, according to reports, Stones has now emerged as a more ambitious target.

The Manchester City F.C. defender earns around £250,000 per week at the Etihad Stadium, which could present a significant financial hurdle for Everton’s ownership group, led by Dan Friedkin.

Despite that, interest in the England international is expected to be strong both domestically and overseas, particularly as he has endured a difficult spell with injuries in recent seasons.

Former scout Mick Brown believes Moyes would be extremely enthusiastic about signing Stones, insisting the defender would represent a clear upgrade on Everton’s current options at the heart of defence.

Now 31, Stones has battled recurring fitness issues, most recently sidelined with a thigh problem.

Yet when fully fit, he remains one of the Premier League’s most accomplished centre-backs. His quality has earned praise from top coaches, including Thomas Tuchel earlier this campaign.

The Barnsley-born defender boasts 255 Premier League appearances and has lifted six league titles, along with two FA Cups, four EFL Cups, a UEFA Super Cup, a Club World Cup and the 2022–23 Champions League.
