Everton Finally Have the Selection Dilemma They’ve Been Waiting for as Options Emerge

Dominic Calvert-Lewin was given a standing ovation as he left the pitch during Everton’s 4-0 victory over Wolves, a match in which the fans showed their appreciation for the striker, who was unlucky to have two goals disallowed.

Both of his efforts were credited to Craig Dawson after the final touch.

His replacement, summer signing Armando Broja, also received a warm reception from the home supporters as he made his debut.

Broja was fit for selection for the first time this season and was keen to make an impact.

Sean Dyche must have been pleased with the performances of both players on what turned out to be an almost flawless evening for the team.

However, the manager now faces the challenge of choosing between the two forwards for future games.

Calvert-Lewin has been given the responsibility of leading the line in 13 out of Everton’s 14 Premier League fixtures, with Beto starting the only other match in the 4-0 loss at Old Trafford.

Despite his regular starting role, Calvert-Lewin has struggled to find the back of the net, scoring only twice so far this season.

His current run of 10 games without a goal has opened the door for another striker to take his place, and while Beto was chosen against Manchester United, it seems Dyche has decided not to rely on the Portuguese forward.

Beto, signed from Udinese last summer, has played only 180 minutes this season.

This creates an opportunity for Broja, who is on loan from Chelsea, to make his mark.

The 23-year-old impressed during his 12-minute cameo against Wolves, creating three chances for Jack Harrison, although none of them resulted in goals.

Broja, born in Slough to Armenian parents, developed through Chelsea’s famed Cobham academy but has struggled to establish himself in the Premier League, largely due to injuries.

After making his professional debut against Everton in March 2020, Broja has had loan spells at Vitesse, Southampton, and Fulham.

Beyond his goal-scoring ability, Dyche will hope that Broja can bring a different dimension to Everton’s attack.

Even in his brief appearance against Wolves, Broja’s pace and dribbling skills offered a contrast to Calvert-Lewin’s strength and aerial presence.

While Dyche may face a tough decision regarding his forward options, he will appreciate the variety that the different styles of his strikers provide.

Another option for Dyche is 20-year-old Youssef Chermiti, who is recovering from a foot injury sustained in pre-season.

This injury came at a frustrating time for the Portuguese forward, as he was gaining confidence and pushing for more playing time this season.

Chermiti, signed from Sporting Lisbon last summer, has shown promise in the limited minutes he has played, and once fully fit, he will look to make a strong case for a starting role.

After making his debut for Everton, Broja spoke about the value of having multiple strikers to choose from.

He told evertontv, “It’s a positive thing to have, and I’m sure the manager’s delighted that he’s got more options to use.

It’s really good to have, and I just want to push my teammates to be better; I want to push myself to be better, push the team, and try to do as well as I can for the team. I’ll keep doing that.”

Despite the impressive 4-0 win over Wolves, goals have been in short supply for Everton this season, and fans are eager for a consistent scorer to emerge.

Dyche will need to decide which of his strikers has the best chance of fulfilling that role and helping the team secure more victories.
