As David Moyes continues to refine his Everton squad, the Toffees are reportedly preparing to target another out-of-favour Premier League player in January — following the remarkable success of Jack Grealish’s loan move.
Everton’s January priorities
The club’s progress under new ownership has been swift. The Friedkin Group, who took charge last summer, backed Moyes substantially during their first transfer window.
A host of new signings arrived, including Grealish, Thierno Barry, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Tyler Dibling, Adam Aznou, Mark Travers, Merlin Rohl, and Carlos Alcaraz.
Their arrivals marked a new era for Everton, one built around ambition and stability rather than survival.
The results have been encouraging. After seven Premier League games, Everton have climbed as high as eighth in the table and appear to have shed the tag of relegation battlers.
Grealish, in particular, has been outstanding since joining from Manchester City.
The winger netted his first goal for the club in dramatic fashion against Crystal Palace and has looked revitalised on Merseyside after struggling for minutes under Pep Guardiola.
Moyes’s man-management has played a key role in restoring the England international’s confidence and creativity.
Still, not all areas of the squad are functioning smoothly. Everton’s attacking line remains a concern, with both Beto and Barry struggling to find form in front of goal.
Beto, in particular, has endured a disappointing start, while Barry continues to adapt to life in the Premier League.
Strengthening the forward line is therefore expected to be one of Moyes’s main priorities when the transfer window reopens.
Joshua Zirkzee linked with Goodison Park move
According to journalist Pete O’Rourke, Everton are eyeing Manchester United striker Joshua Zirkzee as a potential January target.
The Dutchman has fallen down the pecking order at Old Trafford following the arrival of Benjamin Šeško and could be allowed to leave just 18 months after his move.
O’Rourke explained:
“Everton are another club where the likes of Beto and Barry haven’t really taken off yet. I’d expect them to be looking at someone like Zirkzee when the January window opens. There’ll be plenty of interest if United decide to let him go.”
Described as an “intelligent” player by analyst Ben Mattinson, Zirkzee’s technical skill and versatility could make him an ideal fit for Moyes’s system.
Everton’s recent success in reviving Grealish’s career might also appeal to the young striker, who has yet to make a lasting impression at United.
Should the move materialise, Zirkzee could become the next player to rediscover his best form away from Old Trafford — just as Grealish has done at Goodison Park.
