However, should that deal fail to materialise, the club has backup plans in place.
One alternative under consideration is Southampton’s Aaron Ramsdale. Newcastle previously expressed interest in the 26-year-old during his time at Arsenal before he made the switch to the south coast.
Despite his recent struggles, Ramsdale remains on their radar.
Southampton’s relegation was confirmed over the weekend after a loss to Tottenham, ending their brief return to the Premier League after just one season.
A mass departure of key players is now expected, and Ramsdale is among those likely to be heading for the exit.
Statistically, Ramsdale has endured a difficult campaign—managing just two clean sheets and conceding 54 goals across 23 appearances.
Nevertheless, journalist Peter O’Rourke told Give Me Sport that Newcastle remain interested in the keeper.
According to O’Rourke, Ramsdale ticks all the boxes Howe is looking for in a new signing. Thanks to a relegation clause, a deal could be struck for around £25 million.
Though Ramsdale’s current form might raise eyebrows, his potential is well known.
It’s clear he’s been let down by the poor quality of the side in front of him, with Southampton on course to be remembered as one of the worst teams in Premier League history.
If the Saints fail to add to their points tally before the season ends, they risk finishing with fewer than Derby County’s record-low 11 points in the 2007/08 season.
Ironically, Derby’s only win that year came against Newcastle.
While Trafford remains the priority, Ramsdale represents a capable Plan B—an experienced goalkeeper who could thrive again in a stronger setup.
