Everton are reportedly preparing to make a decisive move for an “insane” Premier League striker in the upcoming January transfer window, with his current club now willing to entertain offers for him.

Everton’s January plans beginning to accelerate

The Toffees have enjoyed an impressive run of form in recent weeks, climbing up to seventh place in the Premier League after winning four of their last five games.

Despite their resurgence, one area that still requires attention is the centre-forward position, especially given their modest return of just 18 league goals so far this season.

Among all the teams sitting above 17th, none have scored fewer goals than David Moyes’ side.

Their most recent outing was a welcome exception, as Everton produced a lively attacking display in a dominant 3-0 victory over Nottingham Forest at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Thierno Barry finally opened his Premier League account by scoring the second goal in that win, ending a run of 14 appearances without finding the net.

However, his breakthrough does little to mask the overall concerns.

Beto, too, has struggled to make an impact, with the 27-year-old managing only a single league goal. With nearly half the season gone, those numbers will unquestionably worry Moyes.

As a result, Everton are now exploring striker options for January.

TEAMtalk report that the Merseyside club are preparing to make a move for Manchester United forward Joshua Zirkzee, provided the Red Devils are willing to reduce their £35m valuation.

They will face stiff competition, with three other Premier League sides also expressing interest.

However, AS Roma currently lead the race and have already initiated direct talks for a winter transfer.

Manchester United are open to parting ways with the Dutch striker, who remains behind Benjamin Sesko in Erik ten Hag’s pecking order and has started only three league matches this season.

Would “insane” Zirkzee be a gamble for Everton?

Moyes will hope Barry’s goal against Forest signals a turning point, but the overall evidence so far suggests the 23-year-old still needs time to settle.

That makes the idea of adding another forward all the more appealing if Everton want to mount a credible push for European qualification.

Zirkzee does possess qualities that make him an intriguing option. Scout Ben Mattinson has praised the youngster for his “insane” ability, and he recently showcased his talent by scoring a composed finish in United’s 2-1 win over Crystal Palace.

Yet he, too, has endured issues with consistency. The Netherlands international has found the net only once in the Premier League this season, following a debut campaign in which he scored just three.

Given Everton’s promising position and the opportunity to build on their strong first half of the campaign, their priority should be securing a striker with a more proven, reliable scoring record.

While Zirkzee has undeniable potential, the Toffees may be better served by targeting a more prolific option to maximise their chances of sustaining a European challenge.
