One player whose future remains uncertain is veteran defender Seamus Coleman.

However, David Moyes has now openly expressed his desire for Coleman to stay at the club for another season.

Moyes Wants Coleman to Stay at Everton

Coleman, whose contract is nearing its expiration, has yet to receive any clear indication regarding a potential extension.

Back in December, the 36-year-old acknowledged that he could depart from Everton, given the lack of discussions about a new deal.

However, Moyes’ return to Goodison Park could provide Coleman with an opportunity to extend his tenure at the club.

During a press conference on Friday, Moyes made it clear that he would love to see Everton offer Coleman a new contract for the upcoming season.

“You don’t just keep people for the sake of keeping them because if you did, every club would have hundreds of older players,” Moyes stated.

“But if we had our way, we would try and keep Seamus around—definitely. Or at least give him the opportunity to stay, though he may have something else planned.”

Moyes also suggested that Coleman could transition into a role with the club’s younger players, should he decide to remain at Everton.

“Seamus could be a great person to have around, even if he wasn’t playing all the games.

He might be able to feature in the Under-21s or take on a coaching role with the younger boys if that’s what he wants,” Moyes added.

The Everton boss acknowledged that keeping Coleman is still an option for the club, but injuries have been a concern.

“We might still decide to keep him on anyway, but the problem for me is Seamus picking up injuries.

You need to get value from your players, and we have to be mindful of that, especially since we’ve had too many injuries.”

After another injury setback in what has been a challenging season, Coleman has now returned to training.

Moyes Compares Coleman to Luka Modric

While Coleman has been sidelined, Moyes has praised James Tarkowski for stepping up as a leader within the squad.

However, he still believes Coleman has plenty to offer in terms of leadership and experience.

Moyes even drew a comparison between Coleman’s longevity and that of Luka Modric, the Real Madrid midfielder still playing at a high level in his late 30s.

“Absolutely, and sometimes you have to make the right decisions,” Moyes said when asked if he wanted Coleman to stay.

“Seamus might be required to do that job, and he might still be one of the best at it.

“I don’t think age in football is as important as it was years ago—just look at Modric.”

With Everton undergoing major changes, Coleman’s future remains uncertain, but Moyes is eager to see the veteran defender continue playing a role at the club.
