Everton suffer fresh injury setback at the start of the international break
David Moyes has managed to steady Everton’s early season after a shaky start, with the Toffees responding to their opening-day defeat by winning back-to-back Premier League matches.
Those results have pushed them up to fifth in the table, restoring some confidence around Goodison Park.
Key summer signings Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Jack Grealish have both delivered impressive performances in recent weeks, setting the tone for the squad.
Moyes will now be hoping that deadline-day recruit Merlin Rohl can make a similar impact as he begins his life in English football.
However, Everton’s failure to secure a defensive signing on the final day of the transfer window could yet prove a costly oversight.
Fresh setback for Vitaliy Mykolenko
Everton’s defensive concerns deepened when Vitaliy Mykolenko was forced to leave the Ukraine national team camp after undergoing an MRI scan that revealed a fresh muscle injury.
Dmytro Babelyuk, a lecturer in health and care management at Arden University, voiced his frustration on social media, criticising the club’s handling of the left-back. Writing on X on 3 September, he said:
“Vitalii Mykolenko has left the Ukraine national team camp with another muscle injury. Why? Because Everton rushed him back just 18 days after his previous problem, then made him play two full 90-minute matches in three days. That is not recovery — it is negligence.”
In a follow-up post, he added: “It’s shocking unprofessionalism from Everton. Unbelievable to see this in 2025, in the Premier League. Now Mykolenko faces a longer rehab — but does anyone at the club even care?”
Moyes faces difficult decisions
The Ukrainian international only just returned from a groin issue that kept him out of Everton’s opening fixtures against Leeds and Brighton.
He made his comeback in the Carabao Cup clash with Mansfield Town and followed it up with a full match in the 3-2 win over Wolves. But that quick turnaround has seemingly left him sidelined once again.
In Mykolenko’s absence, Moyes may have little choice but to turn to new signing Adam Aznou. The young defender boasts an impressive pedigree, having come through Barcelona’s academy and spent time with Bayern Munich, but he is still largely untested at senior level.
James Garner has already been deployed in defence this season when Mykolenko was unavailable, while Aznou himself had only just recovered from an injury before featuring against Mansfield.
The manager will be desperate not to rush Aznou into a role that could expose his inexperience too early, but depending on the severity of Mykolenko’s setback, Moyes may be left with no alternative.
For now, all eyes will be on the medical updates, which will determine whether Everton’s gamble on deadline day backfires sooner than expected.
