Everton remain active in the transfer market this summer as David Moyes continues reshaping his squad.

This has led the club to look at alternative options. According to TEAMTalk, one name that remains firmly on Everton’s radar is Lyon’s highly-rated Belgian winger Malick Fofana.

 

The report suggests that Moyes’ side previously saw an offer rejected earlier in the window, but they could revive their pursuit if they receive encouragement from the player’s camp that he is keen on the move.

 

Lyon are not expected to let their young star go cheaply. Earlier in the summer, reports suggested the French club could demand as much as £51 million for Fofana – a fee that would represent a new club-record signing for Everton.

Why Malick Fofana fits the bill

 

Fofana is widely regarded as one of Europe’s most exciting young wingers. Football scout Antonio Mango described the Belgian as a “game changer,” and his performances last season backed up that claim.

 

Still just 20 years old, he has already become an integral part of Lyon’s first team, demonstrating maturity and consistency well beyond his age.

 

Across 41 appearances in all competitions last season, Fofana contributed 11 goals and five assists.

 

His performances in Europe were particularly eye-catching, as he managed six goals and an assist in just ten Europa League appearances.

 

His ability to produce on the continental stage has only enhanced his growing reputation.

 

One of his standout qualities is his dribbling ability. Transfermarkt analyst Joachim Durand noted that Fofana “shines in one-on-one situations,” and the data supports this assessment.

 

In Ligue 1, he averaged 6.34 progressive carries per 90 minutes, ranking him in the top three percent of forwards in the division.

 

That skillset – direct, confident, and unpredictable – is exactly what Everton’s attack has been lacking in recent years.

Drawing comparisons with Lukaku

 

Some Everton fans have drawn parallels between Fofana and another Belgian who once lit up Goodison Park: Romelu Lukaku.

 

While the two players occupy different positions – Lukaku being a clinical centre-forward and Fofana an explosive winger – there are similarities in terms of their age, profile, and potential impact.

 

When Lukaku joined Everton permanently in 2014 for £28m after a successful loan spell, it was a club-record deal at the time.

 

If Everton were to pay Lyon the reported £51m asking price, Fofana would likewise become the most expensive signing in the club’s history.

 

Coincidentally, Lukaku was 20 when he first arrived on loan and 21 when he signed permanently, the same stage of development that Fofana now finds himself in.

 

Lukaku went on to become a talisman for the Toffees, scoring 87 goals and providing 27 assists in 166 appearances.

 

His final season at Goodison Park saw him net 25 Premier League goals before earning a move to Manchester United.

 

For Moyes and Everton, the hope would be that Fofana could emulate that kind of influence, bringing flair, goals, and a match-winning presence.
