A front runner has emerged in Rangers' search for a new sporting director following a major breakthrough.
Rangers Football Club is reportedly close to appointing a new figure to lead their football operations, following a two-month search that began after CEO Patrick Stewart identified the role as a key outcome of a strategic review.
Stewart emphasized the importance of this position, stating it would be filled by a seasoned professional tasked with overseeing all football-related matters and aligning departments under a unified, long-term vision.
According to the Daily Mail, Rangers have identified Kevin Thelwell as their preferred candidate.
Currently serving as Everton’s director of football since February 2022, Thelwell is expected to leave the club at the end of the season amid a structural overhaul initiated by Everton’s new owners, The Friedkin Group.
Thelwell brings extensive experience to the role, having held several prominent positions in football.
At Wolverhampton Wanderers, he progressed from academy director to director of football, playing a pivotal role in the club’s rise from League One to European competition.
His recruitment successes included players like Diogo Jota, Ruben Neves, and Conor Coady.
He also spent time at New York Red Bulls, where he helped the team reach the MLS Cup Playoffs in 2020 with the youngest squad in the league.
Notably, he became England’s youngest academy manager in 2006 when appointed by Derby County at just 32 years old.
Thelwell’s departure from Everton was confirmed last month. In a statement issued through the Association of Sporting Directors, he reflected on the difficulties he faced, including financial constraints, points deductions, and player trading challenges.
Despite these issues, he believes he leaves Everton in a stronger position, both financially and competitively.
Over his tenure, Everton earned £225 million from player sales but spent only £145 million across six transfer windows.
He emphasized his commitment to the club’s long-term stability and expressed pride in the progress made during his time at Goodison Park.
With his track record and experience, Thelwell appears poised to play a central role in shaping Rangers’ footballing future.
