Despite selling Georginio Rutter, Archie Gray, and Crysencio Summerville this summer, Leeds United made significant investments in its squad as it aims to avoid a third consecutive season in the Championship.
TEAMTalk compiled a list of the most expensive signings from Championship clubs, with Joe Rodon (£10 million), Largie Ramazani (£9.9 million), and Jayden Bogle (£5 million) all ranking in the top 10.
However, one former player believes that the West Yorkshire club could make a marquee signing during the January transfer window, which could push them into the top two spots and secure promotion to the Premier League.
Leeds to make a major move in January?
Former Scotland international Frank McAvennie thinks Leeds have a strong starting eleven but lack the squad depth needed to compete for the Championship title.
As a result, McAvennie expects The Whites to be active in the transfer market in January, potentially making one major signing or a few key additions to strengthen the team for the final stretch of the season.
“They’ve got a good 11, 12, 13 players,” McAvennie told Football Insider. “But when you look beyond that, if people get injured, there’s a lack of depth.
Right now, everyone’s happy, everyone’s playing, and they’re all eager to get back to the Premier League.
“That’s great, but only if they can keep these players fit and avoid injuries.
The manager is clever, and he’ll keep the team working, with those stepping in just needing to do the job until January.
I’m sure they’ll buy someone then.
“I’ve got a soft spot for Leeds, and I want to see them get promoted, but that won’t happen without setbacks.
They’re doing well at the moment, and they’re taking things cautiously, one game at a time—the usual football approach.”
Leeds are unbeaten in their first four Championship matches, securing two wins and two draws.
Currently sitting in fourth place with eight points, Daniel Farke’s team trails league leaders Sunderland by four points.
A key signing or two in January could be the boost needed to secure a top-two finish.
