After the collapse of negotiations with 777 Partners, American businessman Dan Friedkin has emerged as the leading candidate to take over Everton.
Documents have been filed at Companies House, indicating that Friedkin’s acquisition of the Premier League club is now seen as a formality.
As is often the case with new ownership, a managerial change could soon follow.
According to TBR, Friedkin, currently the president of Italian club AS Roma, is considering reuniting with Jose Mourinho, a high-profile and ambitious appointment for Everton.
The club’s leadership is eyeing a big-name manager once the ownership change is finalized, expected in 2025.
Friedkin is already using intermediaries to explore options for Sean Dyche’s potential successor, with Mourinho a strong candidate.
The two worked together at Roma, and Friedkin holds Mourinho in high regard.
The 61-year-old Portuguese coach, now at Turkish side Fenerbahce, could be tempted by the opportunity to return to the Premier League for one final challenge.
“Mourinho is a very good person and a great coach,” Friedkin said during their time at Roma.
The American businessman and his team believe Mourinho is the caliber of manager they want, envisioning parallels to Carlo Ancelotti’s time at Goodison Park.
Like Ancelotti, Mourinho is a coach with experience at the highest levels who could help an underachieving club rise in the Premier League table.
While Mourinho’s tactical prowess may not be what it once was, his potential arrival would signal Everton’s ambition under new ownership.
In the meantime, should Sean Dyche lose his job before the season ends, Everton could turn to another familiar face—David Moyes.
The legendary former Toffees manager is being considered as an interim replacement if needed.
Moyes, currently out of work after leaving West Ham United, spent a decade at Everton, where he led the team to the Champions League qualifying rounds and an FA Cup final.
He is seen as a ‘safe pair of hands’ to guide Everton through the remainder of the season and ensure their Premier League survival, a crucial goal for Friedkin’s long-term plans.
TBR reports that Moyes has already been in discussions with Everton’s current leadership as doubts grow about whether Dyche is the right man to keep the club in the Premier League.
While Everton have remained unbeaten in their last three matches, moving out of the relegation zone, they have only managed one win from seven Premier League fixtures in the 2024/25 season.
Sources revealed back in September that Dyche, who had previously enjoyed success at Burnley, was at risk of losing his position as Everton manager as the team prepared for the busy festive period of fixtures.
