Newcastle Defender Matt Targett Attracts Interest from Charlotte FC and European Clubs

Eddie Howe and Newcastle United are open to allowing defender Matt Targett to leave this month, and the 29-year-old is attracting significant interest.

Targett has made just two appearances for the Magpies this season, with illness disrupting his 2024/25 campaign.

Now, the former Aston Villa full-back could depart St. James’ Park, with several clubs vying for his signature.

Charlotte FC Eyeing Targett Loan Deal

According to TBR Football’s chief correspondent Graeme Bailey, Charlotte FC is considering Matt Targett as a potential loan signing.

The MLS club is managed by Dean Smith, Targett’s former boss at Aston Villa, who is eager to reunite with the player in the United States.

Eddie Howe has expressed his admiration for Targett, stating: “The time he has spent injured has been hugely frustrating for him and for us because we’ve missed a very, very good player.

Matt is technically, for me, one of the best players in the squad.”

Dean Smith is targeting the British market this transfer window and has also explored a deal for Miguel Almirón.

However, no agreement has been reached, with Newcastle and Almirón holding firm on their demands.

Charlotte FC’s MLS campaign begins on February 23rd against the Seattle Sounders, and Smith is eager to strengthen his squad.

Bringing Targett on loan is a priority, especially as Newcastle has been open to his departure since last summer.

Strong Interest in Targett Across Europe

Targett is not lacking options, with TBR Football reporting interest from several European clubs.

Belgian Pro League side Anderlecht and Bundesliga teams Eintracht Frankfurt and Mainz are among those keen on the full-back.

Both Frankfurt and Mainz are competing for Champions League qualification in the Bundesliga, presenting exciting opportunities for the former England youth international.

Additionally, there is reported interest in Targett from within the Premier League, underscoring the player’s appeal.

With offers coming from multiple leagues, Targett is set to have a range of choices as he considers his next move away from Newcastle.
