Lloyd Kelly joined Juventus on loan from Newcastle United in January, with the deal including a mandatory purchase clause set for the summer.

The total value of the transfer could reach £20 million if all conditions are met.

The 26-year-old defender had signed with Newcastle on a free transfer the previous summer but made just 14 appearances across all competitions in the first half of the season before moving to Italy.

Since joining Juventus, Kelly has featured 13 times, although a recent thigh injury has threatened to sideline him for the remainder of the campaign.

Juventus, like Newcastle, are pushing for Champions League qualification, with only three matches left in their Serie A season.

They currently sit fourth, clinging to a Champions League spot on goal difference and just a point ahead of the team below them.

According to Tuttomercato, Juventus must secure qualification for a UEFA competition next season to complete Kelly’s transfer.

However, Newcastle sources have dismissed any concerns, insisting the transfer will go through regardless of Juventus’ European qualification or Kelly playing again this season.

The Gazette reports that performance-related clauses, already fulfilled by Kelly, have triggered the obligation to buy.

Further confirmation came from Italian outlet Il Biancanero, which stated that Kelly’s number of appearances has activated the permanent transfer.

Instead of European qualification being a trigger for the full transfer itself, it will instead influence the potential add-ons Newcastle could receive.

The total package for the loan and permanent transfer stands at £14.5 million, with Newcastle set to earn an additional £5.4 million if Juventus qualify for European competition.

That would bring the overall potential value of the deal to around £20 million.

Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano also confirmed the deal, tweeting that Kelly’s move to Juventus was always intended to be permanent and has now been formally completed.

From Newcastle’s perspective, this is seen as a shrewd piece of business. Kelly, who was on a high salary, arrived for free but now leaves for a significant profit.

The sale helps Newcastle with their Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) compliance heading into the 2025–26 season.

Despite initially being hesitant to sell Kelly in January, Newcastle have thrived since his departure.

The team has secured the Carabao Cup and climbed to fourth in the Premier League, with three matches remaining.

Reflecting on the decision, Newcastle manager Eddie Howe shared his thoughts back in February: “We were very reluctant on our side.

Lloyd had only just signed, and we believed in his abilities. It was frustrating for him not to play more, partly due to the strong competition in his position.

“But we’re operating in a world where PSR is a factor, and sometimes we have to make decisions with long-term benefits in mind. This was one of those cases.

“Lloyd leaves with our best wishes. I’m confident he’ll succeed in Italy—it’s a great opportunity for him.”
