Exclusive: Newcastle step up contract negotiations with defender

Fabian Schar’s contract with Newcastle United is set to expire at the end of the 2024-25 season.

The 33-year-old, who joined from Deportivo La Coruna in 2018, remains a crucial player for Eddie Howe’s squad.

Newcastle are eager to extend Schar’s stay and have already held preliminary talks.

Negotiations are set to intensify in the coming weeks as the club aims to secure a new deal for the Switzerland international.

Last year, Schar found himself in a similar situation but ultimately signed a one-year extension after playing a vital role in Newcastle’s defense.

This season, he has made 26 appearances across all competitions, contributing four goals and one assist.

The 86-cap Swiss defender has started 24 of those matches, helping Newcastle push for a Champions League return.

Since arriving nearly seven years ago, Schar has made 214 appearances for the Magpies, solidifying his place as a key figure in the squad.

Newcastle are also planning squad reinforcements for the summer.

Football Insider reported on February 4 that Howe had targeted a right winger and a centre-back in January.

These positions were identified as areas for improvement even before Miguel Almiron and Lloyd Kelly’s departures, but suitable targets were not found.

The club is now expected to address these needs in what promises to be a busy summer transfer window.

Meanwhile, Newcastle are preparing for next month’s League Cup final and currently sit sixth in the Premier League.

With the top five likely to qualify for the Champions League, the Magpies remain in contention for a coveted European spot.
