David Moyes finally secured his first victory of the 2025/26 season on what turned out to be a landmark afternoon for Everton, as the club celebrated a memorable day at their new home.

Garner must return to midfield

Another pressing issue for Moyes is ensuring James Garner plays in his natural role. With the defensive shortage forcing him to deputise at the back, Tim Iroegbunam partnered Idrissa Gueye in midfield.

While Iroegbunam is promising, he contributed just one assist in 18 appearances last season and has yet to prove he can consistently deliver in that area.

Moyes stressed the importance of midfielders contributing more goals and praised Garner’s ability to do so, describing his versatility as vital for the squad.

However, he admitted the long-term aim is to restore Garner to midfield, where his creativity and goalscoring instincts are best utilised.
