West Ham United are actively pursuing a new centre-back ahead of the January transfer window as they prepare to replace Max Kilman, whose performances this season have been deemed “nowhere near good enough”.
Despite a recent upturn in results – with seven points taken from their last three Premier League matches – the Hammers’ defensive problems remain unresolved.
Nuno Espirito Santo’s side have now gone nine consecutive league games without a clean sheet, repeatedly showing vulnerability at the back.
Even in their 3-2 win over Burnley earlier this month, West Ham looked uncertain defensively.
Alphonse Areola gifted the Clarets a goal with an error, while Kilman’s struggles continued in the following 2-2 draw away at AFC Bournemouth, where he conceded a penalty and was also at fault for the Cherries’ second goal.
The 28-year-old’s latest mistakes appear to have pushed the club towards making a decisive move in January for an upgrade.
West Ham pushing ahead with plans to replace Max Kilman
Former scout Mick Brown confirmed to Football Insider that the London club are targeting defensive reinforcements.
He stated: “West Ham would like to upgrade on Max Kilman.
They’ve assessed that he isn’t good enough for where they want to be, so the next step is identifying somebody who they can bring in to improve.
“They will already be aware of some who might be available and working to find out about others.
Kilman is definitely somebody they believe they can improve upon because his performances have been nowhere near good enough this season.
“In that game against Bournemouth, he gave away the penalty, and then it was his mistake that led to the second goal as well.”
Wayne Rooney also criticised Kilman’s display, arguing that he was fortunate to stay on the pitch. Regarding the penalty incident, Rooney said: “It’s a penalty, and it has to be a red card.
He’s six yards out, it’s a clear goal-scoring opportunity, so it baffles me that it isn’t a red card.”
The decision to seek a new centre-back is hardly unexpected when considering Kilman’s inconsistency.
Against Burnley, he failed to win any of the three duels he contested, further highlighting his diminishing influence.
Journalist Joshua Mbu was among those who took to X to criticise his performance in that match.
Kilman is also one of the club’s highest earners, collecting £100,000 per week.
Given his struggles and the fact he has not justified his substantial wages this season, West Ham may view January as an ideal time to cash in and bring in a more reliable defensive presence.
