Newcastle United are reportedly closing in on the signing of Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford, marking what could be their first major addition of the summer transfer window.
According to Fabrizio Romano, the Magpies are “planning to get the deal done very soon” for the 22-year-old English shot-stopper, who has been on Eddie Howe’s radar since January. Newcastle now look set to secure his signature after months of monitoring.
Trafford’s reputation has grown significantly since his move from Manchester City to Burnley in the summer of 2023. He was a key figure in Scott Parker’s team, contributing to a defensive record that ranked as the best in the country last season.
Newcastle Closing in on Trafford
Providing an update on X, Romano stated:
“Newcastle are closing in on James Trafford deal, final details being sorted! Agreement almost done with Burnley and then it will be here we go. Newcastle are planning to get the deal done very soon.”
Should the move go through, Trafford will become Newcastle’s first major signing of the summer, following the earlier addition of Spanish teenager Antonito Cordero on a free transfer.
His arrival would come as a boost for Howe, who has faced a challenging transfer window so far.
Newcastle have missed out on several high-profile targets. Chelsea have reportedly agreed a £50m deal for Brighton’s Joao Pedro—Howe’s top attacking target—while other pursuits, including those of Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, have also ended in disappointment, with both players heading to Manchester United.
While no official fee has been confirmed, Burnley are believed to value Trafford at £35 million, according to ChronicleLive. A £25m bid was reportedly rejected on Sunday, but negotiations are ongoing, as reported by Sky Sports.
Howe will be eager for Trafford’s signing to kick-start further recruitment. Newcastle are also eyeing Nottingham Forest’s Anthony Elanga after a failed £50m bid for the Swedish international earlier in the window.
