Fabrizio Romano: Everton Arrange Medical for New Signing, Deal Confirmed

According to Fabrizio Romano, Everton Have Finalized Deal to Sign Asmir Begovic as a Free Agent

The Italian transfer specialist reported on 20 August via his personal X account that 37-year-old Asmir Begovic has signed a new deal with Everton, set to run until June 2025, after leaving the club last summer.

Begovic is expected to undergo a medical within the next 24 to 48 hours, following an agreement with Everton to return after spending a season with QPR in the Championship.

Everton Secures Deal to Bring Back Asmir Begovic

While Jordan Pickford is unlikely to relinquish his starting position, adding an experienced goalkeeper like Begovic to the squad is a sensible move as Everton prepares for the 2024/25 campaign.

Despite his age, Begovic made 46 appearances for QPR across all competitions last season, establishing himself as a key player for the London club. He will be ready to step in if needed.

Goalkeeper selection has often been a challenge for Sean Dyche, with limited options available to give Pickford a break.

It’s always a surprise when the England international is benched, making depth in this position crucial.

Many fans had hoped this season would mark Harry Tyrer’s breakthrough following an impressive loan spell with Chesterfield in the National League during the 2023/24 season.

However, with Begovic likely to assume the role of backup goalkeeper, Tyrer and Joao Virginia will have to compete for any remaining opportunities.

Although Begovic has garnered experience across various leagues worldwide, including a previous two-year stint at Goodison Park, his return might raise some eyebrows.

Nevertheless, given the current uncertainty surrounding Everton, having a seasoned and wise player like Begovic in the squad could be beneficial.
