Fabrizio Romano Shares Update on ‘Fantastic’ Maurizio Sarri and Everton Amid Sean Dyche Uncertainty

According to an Italian journalist’s Daily Briefing (26 September), despite Maurizio Sarri being a “fantastic” manager, Everton has not approached or held talks with him.

Sarri has been mentioned as a potential replacement for Sean Dyche following Dan Friedkin’s takeover at Goodison Park, as Dyche faces pressure after a winless start to the season [Corriere dello Sport, 25 September].

Fabrizio Romano clarified: “Although Sarri has been out of work for 18 months, he remains an excellent manager.

He’s keeping himself updated, always on point, and active. He’s not the type of manager who loses touch when not working.

As for Everton, I’ve no confirmation of any approach or discussions.”

A transition from Dyche to Sarri would represent a dramatic change for Everton.

If one were to compare the two managers’ styles, they’d struggle to find more contrasting football philosophies.

Dyche’s pragmatic, direct approach contrasts with Sarri’s possession-based, intricate style.

For a squad like Everton’s, which has been battling against relegation, Sarri’s focus on possession might not be immediately effective.

Despite calls for Dyche’s dismissal after five winless Premier League matches, bringing in Sarri may not result in an instant improvement.

His tactical approach would require significant changes in squad composition and playing style, which might not suit the team’s current situation.

Therefore, Friedkin might consider waiting until the summer of 2025 to make such a significant change. By then, a rebuild could align better with Sarri’s methods.

For now, with warnings against sacking Dyche prematurely, Friedkin should provide the necessary support to the current manager.

Dyche has previously proven capable of steering teams through difficult periods, and he could still help Everton avoid relegation this season.
