Financial Expert Responds to Latest Todibo Update Amid West Ham Transfer Plans

Graham Potter is eager to strengthen his squad in his first summer transfer window as West Ham manager.

However, a club spokesperson recently revealed that the Hammers will have a modest transfer budget after committing £32 million to make Jean-Clair Todibo’s loan move from OGC Nice permanent.

Football finance expert Dan Plumley has weighed in on the club’s situation following these revelations.

He acknowledged that big-money transfers could limit other deals, though clubs usually strategize across multiple windows.

Speaking to West Ham Zone, Plumley explained that clubs plan for two to three years—or up to six transfer windows—rather than making decisions in isolation.

While obligations to buy players can offer flexibility, they also come with risks if a transfer does not work out.

“I think this is where we often want to look at transfer windows in isolation,” Plumley said.

“We always focus on a one-year picture, but when you consider spending commitments and plans for future windows, the club is actually looking at it across multiple windows.”

He emphasized that West Ham’s financial planning is influenced by on-pitch performance, which has not gone as expected this season.

“There are many moving parts because your performance on the pitch impacts your budget,” Plumley added.

“As we know, results can go either way, and this season probably hasn’t gone the way West Ham would have wanted.”

The Impact of Financial Constraints

West Ham’s recent spending—over £100 million last summer—has contributed to uncertainty about their financial flexibility.

Despite this, the club remains committed to acquiring Todibo permanently from Nice, as initially planned.

Plumley highlighted the risks involved in such deals, noting that while committing to future transfers can be beneficial, it also limits other options.

“The risk and reward in the transfer market is that if a deal doesn’t work out, your ability to make other signings can be affected,” he said.

“That’s why the spokesperson mentioned the need for creativity in making new additions.”

Todibo initially struggled at the London Stadium, as former manager Julen Lopetegui failed to maximize his squad’s potential.

However, the French defender has started in each of West Ham’s last three Premier League matches under Potter, suggesting that he is becoming a key figure in the team.
